Gaia II Review

Gaia II is the second album of the band Mägo de Oz on their trilogy of albums composed by Gaia I, Gaia II, Gaia III: Atlantia and Gaia- Epílogo, an extra album where they put all songs that were thought to be on the other albums but because of the length of these they put them on this one. The 3 albums tell different stories but the three stories are also connected so they can be understood independently. The three of them have the same line of criticizing the human race, the church, and the society.

Now we want to tell you specifically about Gaia II. The story begins when Francisco de Goya and Beethoven hide a message on one piece of art of De Goya and on the 9th symphony on D minor of Beethoven and years later, Nacho, a person with Down's Syndrome is on a museum on Zaragoza watching a piece of art of De Goya and listening the piece of music of Beethoven, and slowly he gets the message of Beethoven and De Goya. Suddenly, he converts himself on a “normal person” and he gets the “sleeping voice”, that meant that he started to remember and kind of remembering of living the lives of all the victims of the inquisition. A detective of the CIA, Rafael Haro, that was commanded by the CIA to solve the death of the governor of Atlanta (The death happens on Gaia I), hears this and for the investigation, he travels to the hospital where Nacho is to talk to him and ask him specifically the story of Azaack (a character of Gaia I). So he started narrating the story and he also said that Azaack prophesied that that night the Pope was going to die. Then on the album, the story of Azaack starts.

Azaack, after the story told on Gaia I, appears on Spain at the time of the inquisition. She was in jail with a Jewish woman called Sarah. Both of them start to be friends and they start telling stories of their towns and cultures to have an easier stay there. After this stories and some other things, it comes the last song: “La Cantata del Diablo”, a musical perfection, where finally Azaack is judged by the jury of the inquisition and there you understand that Gaia (the Mother Nature) is considered by the church as the devil. On this song, Azaack, Nacho and Gaia itself interact. This song ends with the Psalm of the disinherited and the Pope dies that night.

We have to say that this is one of the best albums we’ve ever heard and we highly recommend it. We love the genre of Rock n’ Roll, Heavy Metal, Celtic music, Classic music, Opera and Opera Rock and the album has the perfect combination of them and a great story. Yes, it has some songs that aren’t that good, but in general is a magical album that makes you addicted to it. W also recommend to listen to Gaia I and Gaia III: Atlantia, because they are, together and Individually one of the greatest pieces of art ever made in Spanish music. Yes, it is a hard understanding music, but when you get used to it, you love it.
